Miss Florence Backsman, 49, a teacher at the Ninth Street School, Newport, died at her home 824 Monroe st. Newport, Wednesday of pneumonia after being ill 10 days. Miss Backsman was born and reared in Newport and had been an instructor in the Newport schools for a number of years. She is survived by her parents, Henry Backsman and wife; a sister, Rose, a teacher in the Park Avenue School, and three brothers, Dr. E B Backsman, physician; Joseph connected with the US Veterans Bureau, Cincinnati, and Lee all of Newport.
Funeral services will be held Friday with requiem high mass at St Stephen Church at 9 am. Burial will be in St Stephen Cemetery. Miss Rose Backsman, who became ill with pneumonia at the same time, is improving and it is believed she will recover.
Anderson Owens, superintendent of Newport school, announced all schools in the city will be closed Friday to permit students to attend the funeral. Because of the closing of the schools it will be necessary to postpone the enrollment of high school pupils until Monday. All grade pupils have been instructed to appear Monday at their classes.
