A Dangerous Blaze
Mice and matches or spontaneous combustion were responsible for a
brisk blaze at John Hilbert & Bros grocery, Third and Monmouth streets yesterday
afternoon. The fire started in the southeast corner of the building among
some boxes of matches and as the grocery was closed, had a good headway before
passers by discovered the blaze. An alarm was turned in from Box 9 and by
good work with chemical extinguishers, the fire was extinguished with the use of
water.
The large plate glass windows in the front of the building were demolished. The loss will be about $1000, equally divided between the building and the content. L O Maddux owns the building which is a large three story flat. The upper floors are occupied by tenants among whom there considerable excitement for a while.
