NEWPORT KY. June 13-J L Armstrong's tobacco warehouse, corner of Fourth and Moss streets, was entirely destroyed by fire Friday afternoon. The building is 100 by 60 feet and built entirely of frame, two stories in height. The Newport fire department responded quickly but a strong wind was blowing from the north and within 20 minutes 15 small dwellings were destroyed.
Nearly all of the hose belonging to the Newport fire company was caught in the fire and destroyed and Covington was appealed to for aid. During the excitement of the fire, another alarm was turned in from box 59 at Fifth and Central, Newport, which necessitated the taking off of one engine to that fire. Mrs. Kuhl, who lived in one of the buildings which was burned, was seriously ill and had to be carried out by the firemen. The loss was complete. Effects of the residents caught fire after they were removed from the building. The loss will probably amount to $30,000 with but little insurance on the property.
