Finchtown in 1876

NEWPORT
MANY of our citizens who have never visited the enterprising
little village of Finchtown, one mile south of Newport and pleasantly located on
the Licking River, would feel somewhat interested in a description of the place.
They have five slaughterhouses and on distillery up there, which are kept
constantly in operation, one elevator for coal, three dairies, one saloon and
ten dwelling houses.
It is a favorite resort for persons fond of skiff riding. The citizens of the place are nearly all Germans, and say they have no need of either Court house or Jail, but feel a growing want of a school house.
