Ethel Parker

Kentucky Post, Monday, 2 February 1903, page 5

Ethel Parker, 24, of 202 Columbia Street, Newport, tried to commit suicide Sunday evening by swallowing carbolic acid. She was taken to Speers Hospital and the physicians say she will recover.

Her mother refused to allow her to go out with a young man named Henry Eichert, and this is the alleged cause of the girl's rash act. She was getting ready to go to the theater when her mother told her to stay home. She grabbed a bottle of carbolic acid and before anyone could stop her swallowed the contents. There were several people in the house, Mary Cahlen, W N Reynolds and C E Davis and they all yelled for a doctor.

The young man on the outside called in Dr. F A Clarke, Constable Chic Brooker called the patrol and arrested all hands on a charge of disorderly conduct. It is said three years ago the Parker girl attempted suicide by carbolic acid. She claimed Harry Burke, whom she married treated her cruelly.

In the Police Court Marie Cahlen, William N Reynolds and Charles E Davis were dismissed and Mrs. Banker was fined $5 and costs.
