Dr. Elmore B Backsman of 826 Washington av. Newport, who took the examination in Cincinnati Tuesday to become an officer in the Medical Reserve Corps, was certified to Washington for a commission as an officer it ws announced Wednesday. Dr. Backsman is well known in Newport, having graduated from Newport High School. He also graduated from the Cincinnati Medical College.

Colonel Thomas P Carothers told commissioners his physical condition, due to asthma made it impossible for him to continue. Dr. E B Backsman, medical examiner on the board, resigned because of other business required his attention.

It was revealed Friday that Mrs. Elizabeth C Backsman, 816 Washington av. Newport, was granted a divorce from Dr. Elmore Backsman, prominent Newport physician on her charges of cruelty and abandonment. The divorce was granted by Judge A M Caldwell in Campbell Circuit Court, the court also order also given the plaintiff custody of their child, Arthur Lee Backsman. The couple were married in Louisville on Sept. 7, 1911.
Mrs. Backsman charged she could not entertain friends at her home because of her husband's actions.

Solemn Requiem High Mass for Dr. Elmore B Backsman, prominent Campbell county physician, will be sung t 9 am Wednesday at Stephen Church, Newport. Prayers will be said at 8:30 am at the Betz funeral home, Newport, where friends may call from 2 to 9 pm Tuesday.
Dr. Backsman, 70, died Saturday at his home on Chapman Lane, Cold Spring. He had offices at 828 Washington avenue, Newport. He had suffered from a heart ailment for about a year. A 1911 graduate of the Ohio Miami Medical College, Cincinnati, he had been a practicing physician 41 years. He was on the staff of St Elizabeth Hospital, Covington, and served as surgeon for the St Ann Convent, Melbourne.
He served as a captain in France and Germany in the Medical Corps during World War I. He was a member of James Wallace Costigan Post, American Legion, Newport, which will conduct military rites at the funeral. A lifelong resident of Campbell county, he was a member of St Stephen Court, Catholic Order of Foresters, Newport.
He leaves a son, Dr. A Lee Backsman, Tampa Fla. a sister, Miss Rose Backsman and a brother Joseph A Backsman, both of Newport. He also leaves two grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Drs. James A Ryan, Albert Vesper, Robert E Reichert, J Hadley Caldwell, Edward Hermann and Richard Rust, Northern Kentucky physicians.
