Although he filed suit for divorce in the Campbell Circuit Court some months ago, John Hug of Dayton, came to court Thursday and stated he could not secure a divorce as his marriage was not legal. Hug claims his wife has a husband living besides himself and she had never been divorced from him. He produced a copy of the first marriage of his wife, which reads Joseph Wisenborn and Elizabeth Bloem were married in 1881 by Rev William Cassander.

Hugh was brought into court on a rule issued to show cause why he did not pay the $6 alimony to the wife for her support and the five children and gave the illegal marriage plea. Judge Berry stated they can be married by general consent and the husband is primarily liable for the support of the children. The Judge fixed the alimony at $3 a week and gave John Hug until Saturday to pay $35 back alimony, until such time as the case is settled.

The wife and children are living at present at Reading O. She is working to support the children. The grounds of the suit were filed by the husband, alleging she was unfaithful. He claims he did not know of her former marriage when this suit was filed. The husband now asks for the children.

In the suit of Elizabeth Hug against John Hug of Dayton, an action to secure alimony and support for their five children, Judge Berry in the Campbell Circuit Court, made an order requiring Hug to provide for the five children, who are now in the custody of his wife. A rule was issued against Hug, and he is commanded to appear in court in person tomorrow week and show cause why he should not be punished for failing to provide for his children.

This is the divorce suit in which Hug alleges his marriage to his wife was illegal on the grounds she had not been divorced from her first husband when she married him.

Kentucky Post, 7 September 1927

An unusual suit was filed Friday in Campbell Circuit Court by Mrs Elizabeth Hug Tedrow, Newport, divorced wife of the late John Hug, in which she seeks $2288.00 from heirs of John Hug. The amount is alleged due as back alimony which the deceased failed to pay. The suit is directed against John Hug Jr. 826 Saratoga St, Newport, executor of the estate of his father, & Kate Smith & Mamie Faust, children of the deceased.

Mrs Tedrow, who remarried, after divorcing Hug, charges that she obtained a divorce from John Hug, June 21,1905 & Hug was ordered to pay $2 a week alimony. The plaintiff charges Hug since June 21, 1905, until the time of his death, July 23, 1927, failed to pay her alimony. The three defendants, it is charged, were bequeathed the bulk of Hug's estate, while four other children were given $15 each. Mrs Tedrow charges Hug, the executor of the estate, has refused her claim & has threatened to dispose of the estate. Mrs Tedrow seeks $2288 with interest & a lien on the defendant's property. She asks that the settlement of the estate be referred to John Kehm, Master Commissioner. The plaintiff is represented by John W Heuver, attorney.
