NEWPORT

The term of William Johnston, a Police and Fire Commissioner, expired yesterday and at 3 o'clock Mayor Biltz informed Clerk Covalt that when Edward Purser called, that the oath of office should be administrated to him. Mr. Purser called at 3:20 pm and was promptly sworn in as a Police and Fire Commissioner.

Mr. Purser was born in Newport in 1853. He and his brother William and their father started in business as general horse shoers in this city in 1865. Mr. Purser is prominently connected in lodge circles in the city, being a Past Master of Blue Lodge No 358 of Newport and is a member of Olive Branch Chapter R A M No 76 of this city and was elected a few days ago Eminent Commander of Newport Commander No 13, K T. He has also held all offices and was twice elected Dictator and is now Past Director of the Knights of Honor.

He is a member of St Paul's Episcopal Church and has four times been elected vestryman. Mr. Purser resides at 905 York street with his family. He owes his success to close attention to business and his genial way toward all. The appointment will meet with general approval as he is a favorite with all.

Mr. Johnston the retiring officer has made an efficient officer. Mr. Purser's appointment was confirmed at the meeting of the Board of Aldermen last evening.

Edward Purser, 53, member of the Police and Fire Board under Mayor Biltz, died last night at his home near Sixth and Monmouth sts. Newport. He had been ailing for some time and death was due to a complication of diseases.

Purser retired from the horse shoeing business about six months ago. He was a Knight Templar and took an active part in all matters pertaining to Masonry. He leaves a widow and two children, Mrs. L S Cramer and Clifton. The funeral arrangements have not as yet been completed.

The funeral of ex-Police and Fire Commissioner Edward Purser will take place Saturday with services at St Paul Episcopal Church, Newport at 2 pm.

Purser was Past Eminent Commander of the Knights Templar, and the Templars will have charge of the services. Last night a guard of the Knights was posted at his bier. The pallbearers will be D R P Dimmick, W A Patterson, M Winstel and Lawrence Williamson, together with two members of the Knights Templar.

Members of the Newport Commandery No 13 T K are requested to assemble at the Asylum at 1 pm Saturday afternoon to attend the funeral of Edward Purser. The services will be at St Paul Episcopal Church.

The will of Edward Purser, Newport, was probated this morning in the Campbell Co. Court. He bequeaths to his widow the sum of $2000. The balance is bequeathed to his two children, Mrs. Louis Cramer and Clifton Purser, in equal shares with absolute power to dispose of same.

Edward Purser, who was named as executor, qualified and gave bond with Henry Higgin, surety. The will is dated August 1902. The decedent was a former Police and Fire Commissioner of Newport.
