Sergeant Edward Kearns, 65, of 232 E Third st. Newport, one of the most colorful characters of the Newport Police Department is dead. Kearns, a member of the Safety Department for the past ?0 years, died late Wednesday at St Elizabeth Hospital, where he was taken Jan 31 suffering from a right hip fracture.
Kearns was injured when he slipped on the city sidewalk in front of his home. Kearns was named a patrolman 30 years ago under the administration of the late Colonel R W Nelson, then mayor of Newport. He served as a patrolman for 10 years and was promoted to desk sergeant and held the latter position until his injury. During his years of service in the department Kearns has figured in the arrest of a large number of desperate criminals.
Kearns never married but made his home with his two maiden sisters, Bridget and Johanna Kearns and supported them. He also is survived by another sister, Mrs. Catherine Stapleton, a widow. Funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 8:30 am at the Costigan & Roll undertakers, York st. followed by a requiem high mass at 9 am at the Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will be in St Stephen Cemetery.
Frank Bregel, police chief, said he will name a squad of patrolmen to act as pallbearers and escort for Kearns.
