Edmund Nathaniel
Benchley,
a member of the 6th Infantry, is listed on Campbell County's Spanish American
Casualties
as a Corporal. Benchley was not, however, a Corporal but a Lieutenant. He was born in Worcester, MA May 3, 1876. A graduate of the United States
Military Academy, West Point, he was sent directly to Cuba upon graduation in
1898 with the 6th Infantry.
He was fatally shot July 1, 1898 just months after graduation. News of his death reached his family on July 4.
The photograph comes from the West Point website devoted to the Class of 1898.
Benchley is buried at West Point Cemetery.
Incidentally, Edmund's brother, Robert was a writer for the New Yorker and wrote for (and appeared in) Hollywood movies. Robert Benchley's grandson, Peter Benchley, is the author of Jaws.
Edmund Nathaniel Benchley is listed on the Spanish American Monument at Fort Thomas Ky. He served with many of the Campbell County soldiers during the war.
