YOUTH IN RUSSIA-While his Newport friends are swelting in the blazing rays of Old Sol and seeking to keep cool, William Fessler (sic) Newport soldier, is dodging snow balls and icicles in far away Russia. He is stationed at Archangel, Russia. In a letter to Charles D McCrea, Newport finance commissioner, Fessler says he is having the time of his life, but is having a hard time getting word from his Newport friends. He has not received a letter from his home since Feb 24.

Fessler said he is just recovering from a frozen hand, but says other Newport boys, Earl Dietz, Fred Rehling and others, are getting along in good shape. He said his regiment was through some of the toughest fighting in all Russia and that he spent seven continuous days on the firing line and was present when the American forces forced the Bolsheviks to retreat. The American boys in Russia are hungry for news and every time they have an opportunity get together and hold "gab feasts".
