Dr. August Frederick William Helmbold
 

Dr. August Frederick William Helmbold Jr. was born May 2, 1900 in Newport, the son of August Helmbold, and graduated from the Eclectic Medical School in Cincinnati in 1928. He practiced in Newport by 1938; was mayor of Newport under the first Commission Form of Government. He was also elected and served as coroner. He was married to Stella Bauer. He died 2 Feb 1971 in Summerville, South Carolina. and was buried in the Highland Cemetery.

The race is hotly contested among the Republican candidates with Dr. Clarence D Hughes, Dr. Palmer G Keeney, Sarah Whiting Hughes, Jacob Weber and Dr. Vernor Jones contesting the nomination. On the Democratic Dr. August Helmbold and Dr. Thomas J Connolly opposed each other for the nomination.
