MRS. DORA THORNTON
The community of Grants Lick was greatly grieved and shocked when the announcement was made of the sudden departure of one of our aged citizens. Mrs. Dora Thornton. On last Tuesday, Sept 2 when her days work was almost done and she seemingly in the best of health and spirits, started out to assist with the evening chores received the summons, "Well done good and faithful mother, your life's work is added; come up higher." And in the twinkling of an eye her gentle spirit took its flight.
She was born May 17, 1857, hence was 72 years, 2 months and 15 days of age. She was united in marriage with Preston Thornton Feb 18, 1879, thus was privileged to enjoy each others companionship for more than half a century. To this union ten children were born of whom two preceded their mother in death. Those surviving are Mrs. Ethel Aylstock and Mrs. Carrie Tarvin of Mason Ohio, Mrs. Olivia Sheanshang of Newport, Mrs. Bertha Tarvin of Kenton County, Mrs. Lillie Baker, Ben, George and Trevor Thornton of Campbell County.
She was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Sara Ann Bryan and was born and lived all her life in Campbell County. Mrs. Thornton was of a friendly disposition always very industrious and was a strictly home woman, ever faithful and untiring in her labor of love for her family and her home. She will be greatly missed, especially by her good companion, also by the children. She always considered it one of their greatest pleasures to return to the old homestead and visit mother and father and to help them in any way the could.
Her funeral was largely attended Friday morning at the Grants Lick Church conducted by Rev Chas Mangold from the text "There is but a step between you and death." Her granddaughters served as flower bearers, namely; Fern, Dorothy and Helen Thornton, Bernice Baker, Agnes Ertel, Marguerite Aylstock, Irene Tarvin, Mrs. Easter Casson and Mrs. Willa Esber. Her grandsons served as casket bearers, namely; Raymond, Lewis and Ernest Tarvin, Ralph Ertel, Rudolph Casson and Wilmer Thornton.
Mrs. Miles Baker conducted the music. Funeral directors Smith & Sheanshang made and carried out all arrangements for the last sad rites. Besides her family previous names she leaves thirty grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one brother Alonzo Bryan and other relatives and may friends.
