SOLDIER SCARES OFF ASSAILANTS-Military training undergone by S Sgt. Donald Fitzmorris, stationed at Ft Thomas, stood him well early Wednesday when he was the victim of an assault by two civilians at Fourth and Monmouth streets, Newport. In reporting the incident to police Sgt. Fitzmorris said the pair accosted him and asked for a cigarette. When extending his package of cigarettes to the two strangers, the soldier said one of the pair struck him.
In the melee that followed, Sgt. Fitzmorris said he flayed at the pari with his fists and they ran into a nearby yard. Going in pursuit he said he seized one of his assailants and proceeded to administer a beating to the ground. Leaving his victim prostrate in the yard, the sergeant told police he returned to the sidewalk and had a passerby summon police.
When police arrived, the would be assailant had made his escape. A search of the neighborhood failed to disclose any trace of the pair.
