DeMossville
Information came from Marvin Mullins and was distributed by S Lynn 16 Oct 1997.
The first post office was in Grassy Creek and established 20 Dec 1820 with Roswell Kittridge as the Postmaster. DeMossville was in the original Campbell County boundaries but later became part of Pendleton Co. It was located at the Forks of Grassy Creek, 1 mile southwest of its confluence with the Licking River. In 1854, the Post Office was moved to the DeMossville depot to be near the new railroad. The first DeMossville post master was Richard Mullins.
DeMossville was named for Peter DeMoss, a Revolutionary War veteran said to have come to America with General Lafayette. DeMossville was incorporated in 1860. DeMossville had two saloons dating from 1850 to 1871. The operators were Pat Collins and James Oldhouse, but an amendment to the charter was enacted in 1871 prohibiting the sale of spirituous liquors or malt beverages within two miles of DeMossville, with Campbell County exempted but not Kenton Co.
The Union Army marched through DeMossville and on to Portland. In June of 1863 a number of women were arrested at DeMossville because they were believed to be potential spies, "dangerous to the Federal government."
DeMossville was once a thriving railroad and river town with two tobacco warehouses, hotels, railroad depots, Post Office, millinery store, blacksmith shops and grocery stores. Cattle, hogs and milk along with other farm products were loaded on rail cars and shipped to market.
