Some of the information comes from the Thatcher
family files at the Campbell County Historical Society in Alexandria.
Daniel Allen Thatcher was born in 1765 in Amwell, Hunterdon Co, New Jersey. His first wife was Elizabeth Thrasher, born 7 Aug 1773 to John and Mary Elizabeth Fee Aukrom Thrasher. They married in 1 June 1791 in Bourbon Co. She died from childbirth in Bourbon Co in 1796 and was buried in the Thrasher Family Cemetery.
He married his second wife, Susan Cherry, daughter of Aaron and Mary Cherry, 5 June 1797 in Harrison Co. She also died in childbirth in Alexandria in 1806 and was buried in the Thatcher Family Cemetery. Daniel married his third wife Rosanna Baker, daughter of John and Mary Baker in 1807. She was a widow having two children by Samuel Thompson and had been born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania 18 May 1776. She died in Alexandria 28 Dec 1849 and was buried in the Thatcher Family Cemetery. This cemetery was in the back of the original cabin on what is now Alexandria Pike. The cemetery no longer exists.
Daniel came to Alexandria about 1797, built his home of logs and kept a tavern. He was actively interested in the life of the newly forming settlement and took part in the affairs of the county, holding several county offices. He owned much land, farmed some of it, raised stock and had a large distillery on his farm. This farm he gave the name of "High View Farm". This was the second home he built and was across the way from the first log cabin.
A family story from the
Kees family concerning the death of Daniel Allen Thatcher is as follows.
He died in Newport on December 31, 1813 the victim of a suspected poisoning.
One of his slaves customarily poisoned her children at birth. Rosanna,
this third wife was able to rescue one of the slave's child at birth, breast fed
and reared the child with her own. The slave never forgave Daniel and
Rosanna and was suspected of poisoning Daniel. Daniel was not returned to
the family cemetery in Alexandria and where he was buried is now lost over time.
A marker was placed in the cemetery at the time.
