Private Daniel McCarthy, Company A, Ninth United States Infantry
at Ft Thomas, was struck with a baseball bat and badly hurt Sunday afternoon by
Private Charles Campbell of Company C, Ninth Regiment. The two had trouble for
some time previously and each man's friends sided with him.
A general clash was narrowly averted after McCarthy fell unconscious from the blow of the bat. Campbell was arrested and placed in the guardhouse.

Private Dan McCarthy of Company A, Ninth Infantry, was struck on the head with a baseball bat Sunday by Private Charles Campbell. The skull was not fractured by the blow, nor did he suffer a concussion of the brain, although the blow was a powerful one.
Campbell was arrested by Constable Schriever and taken to Newport. Later he was turned over to the military authorities for trial upon request of Mr. Howe, post commander.
