Daniel Hutzel was born 19 Aug 1834 in Neuburg Am Rhein, Pfalz, Bavaria, the son of Jacob Hutzel and Barbara Riedinger. He immigrated to the United States in 1854 and was living in Cincinnati when the Civil War started.  He joined the 4th Light Artillery Ohio Battery on 20 Sep 1861, which had organized at Cincinnati. His first encounter with the enemy was at Bentonville Ark in March 1862, where he performed his duty so efficiently as to compel the enemy to abandon the field.  During the terrible fight at Pea Ridge, his battery was in an exposed position and received the fire of all the enemy's batteries.

 In November he was taken from Helena to Camp Steele, Miss. and remained their until Dec 19, when it joined General Sherman's expedition against Vicksburg and took part in the assault on the enemy's works at Chickasaw bluffs. He was also engaged in the attack on and capture of Arkansas Post, the siege of Vicksburg, Jackson Miss. Daniel mustered out on 25 Sep 1864 returning to Ohio.

After the war he married Agatha Spier in 1865. She was born 5 Feb 1843 in Germany and immigrated with her parents in 1861.

Daniel Hutzel died 19 June 1906 in Johns Hill and was buried in the Johns Hill Cemetery. Agatha Hutzel collected the army pension for Daniel until she died 26 Feb 1912 in Johns Hill and was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery.
