C H Kirkland, 50, yard conductor, was killed when he was struck by a southbound Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad freight train, in the C&O years at 15th street, Covington, early Tuesday. Mr. Kirkland, a veteran of World War I, had been employed by the railroad about two years. He made his home at 728 S Grand avenue, Ft Thomas.
Mrs. Tressa Riffe, Kenton county coroner, said death was accidental. She said the victim suffered a crushed skull, internal injuries and had both legs amputated above the knees. Mrs. Riffe said that although there were not witnesses to the accident, a fellow worker, R G Low, Covington, heard Mr. Kirkland cry out as the freight train passed.
Mr. Kirkland leaves his wife, Lucille Doughty Kirkland and one daughter, Miss Anna Lea Kirkland, one son, Kirk Lindsey; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M E Kirkland of Winnsboro La. six sisters, Mrs. Annabelle Grafton, Mrs. Jean Richardson, Mrs. Lou Thomas, Mrs Mosa Dean Flowers, Mrs. Velman McCarrol and Mrs. Odella Halbrook and four brothers; Maj. E H Kirkland, M E Kirkland Jr. I D and Alvin all of Louisiana. Arrangements are in charge of the A C Dobbling Son funeral home, Ft Thomas.
