The conferring of the Cross of Honor by the Daughters of the Confederacy at Elks Hall in Newport, Monday night was the occasion of a large gathering. The principal speaker of the evening was Dean Baker P Lee of Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington, who delivered an address on Gen. Robert E Lee. He was introduced by Mayor R W Nelson and his talk was received with interest throughout.

The meeting was opened by Mrs. Dr. Peter Thornton, President of the Henrietta Hunt Morgan Chapter, D of C. followed by prayer by Rev Robert Nelson of St Paul Cathedral in Cincinnati. The crosses of honor, molded from an old Confederate cannon, were then conferred on the veterans, James Arnold, James Caldwell, J R Ellis, Basil Duke, Cyrus Hanks, T J Haggard, M R Lockhart and Taylor Williams by Mrs. Kate Perry Mosher.
