Clifton Churches
Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church-119 Main. The Catholic population had grown enough by 1910 for Clifton residents to petition the bishop of the Covington Diocese for a church. At the time Clifton was considered part of St. Stephen Parish on Washington Avenue in Newport. Clifton had about 86 Catholic families and about 100 school age children.
On March 1, 1913, lots were purchased on Schneider Avenue between Oak (since renamed Ash) and Home streets for a church. A fund raising campaign was begun, but the church was not built.
A new site was purchased in 1916 on Main Street for a building housing both a church and school to be called St. Vincent de Paul. The cornerstone was laid in June and the building was dedicated in September. The school opened with 72 students.
A new church replaced the old one in 1959.
