Dr. Clarence David Hughes
 

Dr. Clarence David Hughes was born 21 July 1896 in Bellevue Ky, the son of David and Alice L (Grice). He married Lillian E Bushnell 14 Apr 1920 in Newport. He practiced dentistry in Newport and was appointed Campbell County Coroner when his brother Walter B Hughes died in 1931. Dr. Hughes died 23 Nov 1943 in Speers Hospital and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.

Conrad G Matz of Campbell County Court announced Tuesday that he would appoint Dr. Clarence Hughes, Newport dentist, as coroner of Campbell co. to succeed his brother, Dr. Walter B Hughes who died last week after the burial of the latter.

A number of persons in Campbell co. have sought the appointment including Mrs. Sarah Hughes, wife of the deceased coroner and Dr. Vernon Jones of Dayton.

Dr. Clarence D Hughes, Campbell co. coroner, was investigating the sudden death of Georgia Ciafardini, 2, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ciafardini, 18 W Third st. Newport. Funeral services were to be held Tuesday and burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

Following an illness of two years, Dr. Clarence David Hughes, Newport dentist and one time Campbell county coroner, died late Tuesday at Speers Hospital, Dayton. Born in Bellevue in 1895, he lived most of his lfe in Newport at 726 Columbia street. He was a graduate of Newport High School and the Cincinnati College of Dentistry.

Dr. Hughes served out the unexpired term of his brother, Dr. Walter B Hughes as coroner of Campbell county by appointment in 1931 by Judge Conrad G Matz. He served as a first lieutenant in the Dental Corps in France for 18 months in World War I. He was a member of Shaler Berry Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars; the Forty and Eight Society of the American Legion and the James Wallace Costigan Post of the Legion. He also was a member of St John Evangelical Congregational Church, Newport.

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Lillian Bushnell Hughes, a daughter, Mrs. William B Hodges, Newport; a sister Mrs. Alice Frickman, Ft Thomas, wife of Dr. Oscar W Frickman, Ft Thomas and Newport physician and his father, David Hughes.
