Kentucky Post, Saturday, 26 September 1931, page 1
Distracted because of a recent old age illnes, Christian F Specht, 91, pioneer resident of northern Kentucky, ended his life late Friday by hanging himself from a grape arbor in the rear of the home of his son, Fred W Specht, Newport, pharmacist, 147 Kentucky Drive, Clifton, with whom he lived.
Alarmed at the absence of the elderly man Mrs. Specht notified her husband, who returned home from his place of business at once. In company with Charles Sidell, chief of the Clifton police, Specht found the body of his father. Dr. Clarence B Hughes returned a verdict of suicide. Specht came to this country from Germany in 1846 and settled in Newport, where they became widely known. Christian Specht was a member of the first paid fire department organized in Newport. He served as a fireman from 1870 to 1886.
In addition to his son, Specht is survived by three grandchildren. They are Cliff Specht, pharmacist of Southgate and chief of the Southgate Volunteers Fire Department; Mrs. Florence Stacey and Mrs. Ruth Burke, both of Newport. There are also several great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 pm at the funeral home of Fred A Erschell & Sons. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
