Christian F Mumm

Cincinnati Daily Gazette, Wednesday, 11 January 1882, page 9

A distressing accident occurred at Fred Mumm's torpedo mill on Jefferson street, in the town of Dayton, yesterday afternoon about half past 4 pm. Christ Mumm, a son of the proprietor, and George Havlin were packing torpedoes in a box, when young Mumm accidentally let the lid of the box fall on one of the torpedoes, when a general explosion of the contents of the box followed, causing all the windows of the house to be blown out and the walls, which are of brick, to be sprung to a very great extent.

The young men were very badly injured. Mumm was severely cut about the right hand and right foot, and Havlin was injured in the right arm and right side. Pieces of an earthen dish which young Havlin held in his hand at the time of the explosion, were driven into his injured arm, lacerating it in a fearful manner. The two young men were conveyed to their respective homes, near the mill and Dr. C B Schoolfield was called to attend them.
