Charles Lee Jungerman
Cincinnati Enquirer, 15 September 1890, page 1
Mr. Jungerman came to Newport about three years ago. He was
employed as a surveyor on the C and O Railroad. After it was completed he moved
to Newport and when Mayor Berry's administration went into power, he was elected
as City Engineer, which place he held at the time of his death.
He was a single man and his parents reside in Nashville, Tenn. where his father is engaged in the wholesale grocery business. His remains will be sent to Nashville for interment. Since he has been in Newport he has made quite a number of friends.
His remains will lie in state at St Paul Church until sent home. The inquest will be held this morning and then the preliminary examination. The case will be sent direct to the Grand Jury, which goes in session this morning. The case will hardly be ready for trial at this term of the Court, as one of the defendant's attorneys will not be in the city to attend to it. The preliminary trail will be held by Squire Bodkin, who issued a commitment for the defendant.
Thomas Riley, who did the shooting is about 33 years of age. He is the son of John Riley, collector on the Newport and Covington Bridge. He has been a newspaper reporter for about two years and was considered a very clever news gatherer. He has been employed on the Commonwealth for nearly two years and has proved himself an industrious man.
He never took a drink of liquor in his life and has a very genial disposition. He is a single man and resides with his parents at 122 Orchard street, Newport. At the Covington Police Station last night Mr. Riley was surrounded by a number of friends, who expressed deep sympathy for him.
