NEWPORT NEWS
ARREST OF SUPPOSED REBEL SPIES-About five weeks ago, Charles
Stone, Cyrus Kitchell, or Gitchell, and a man name Weaver, left Jamestown for
the purpose of joining the rebel army, but were captured in the upper part of
Campbell County by Federal soldiers and sent to Camp Chase.
From thence they were forwarded to City Point, Va. via Baltimore for exchange. Upon reaching Richmond, the rebel authorities forwarded them to some point in Western Virginia where they claim to have deserted and returned home. the parties were arrested by the Provost Guard and lodged in the Newport jail on suspicion of being spies.
