Charles Frank Popp

Kentucky Post, Monday, 28 December 1931, page 1

Petty jealousies were believed Monday by police to be the motive for the fatal shooting Sunday of Charles Popp, 38, World War hero, at the latter's rooming house at 946 York st. Newport by William Reichert, former convict and alledged drug addict, another roomer.

The fact that Popp was engaged to Mrs. Mae Jones, owner of the rooming house, is believed by authorities to have caused jealousy between the two men. Eight of the nine bullets fired from the .32 caliber pistol struck Popp, Dr. Helmbold reported. Popp died an hour later at Speers Hospital. Four bulletsentered his right arm, another his right shoulder, one passed thru his left hand and another passed thru his left arm and entered his chest and passed thru his lung and abdoment. Another bullet entered his abdomen and emerged from his back.

Charles Tolle, 4, son of Mrs. and Mrs. Robert Tolle was the only eye witness to the shooting. The boy's mother is a daughter of Mrs. Jones. While on route to the hospital, Popp was questioned by Collins and James Taylor, who accompanied the victim to the hospital. Popp served 13 months overseas during the World War, during which time he was engaged in three major battles and was wounded and decorated for bravery. He worked as a carpenter and paper hanger and had been a roomer at the York st. house for the past several years.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. C E Beagle, Bellevue and Mrs. Katherine Klump, Bellevue, and two brothers, Phillip, Bellevue and Leo, Cincinnati.
