The National Defense League recently organized to agitate increase of army and navy of the United States, will convene in Washington Oct 4 to 7 to confer on matters of national defense.

Charles H Thomer, 73, Civil War Veteran, of 838 Isabella st. Newport, has been named as delegate. Thomer was a private in Co C Fifty-third Regiment Kentucky Volunteers Infantry, serving under Gen. William Nelson during the Civil War. Thomer was shot in the head at the battle of Shiloh, but recovered in time to participate in the battle of Stone River. He is a strong supporter of increase of the army and navy and says he will do all he can to secure the increase at the conference.

Fraternal organizations and patriotic societies will participate in the Newport Memorial Day parade Thursday. The formation will be at 1 pm. State Commander Case will be master of ceremonies. Charles H Thomer, local commander, will give the opening address.

There were not as many Civil War veterans in the Memorial Day parade in Newport Thursday as there were last year. The few who still braved the heat of the day and rode in autos from Fourth and York streets, where street cars were boarded for Evergreen Cemetery. The grizzled veterans asserted their walking days are over.

Members of the Newport Home Guard company, of the Knights of Columbus Lodge and Jr. OUAM Lodge marched in the parade. Addressses were made by Charles Thomer, commander of William Nelson Post GAR and by T A Casey of Dayton.

One of Newport's oldest and best known residents died Wednesday morning when Charles Thomer, passed away at his home, 828 Isabella st. following a short illness.

Thomer was 77 and all his life lived in Newport. He was a veteran of the Civil War and for many years has been active in the affairs of William Nelson Post, GAR. He served two terms as commander of this organization. A widow and several children survive. The funeral arrangements have not been completed.
