Generation No. 2

2. George2 Harris (Charles1) was born February 9, 1773 in Somerset Co, MD, and died May 23, 1836 in Harrisburg, Campbell Co, KY. He married (1) Martha "Patsey" Maddox October 21, 1801 in Maysville, Mason Co, KY, daughter of William Maddox and Violetta Tarvin. She was born Abt. 1771 in Charles Co, MD, and died Abt. 1823 in Campbell Co, KY. He married (2) Jane Hudson June 10, 1824 in Boone Co, KY.

Notes for George Harris: More About George Harris & His Father, Charles Harris Sr, of Maryland "They came to the West when the forest stood mighty, solemn and grand; They built their home in shaded wood that covered the Western land."

George Harris was a soldier, farmer and politician. Born in Somerset Co, Maryland, and christened at Green Hill Church, Stepney Parish, he spent his formative years on his father's plantation in Worcester County, Maryland. He left home about 1794, setting out for Kentucky. When he got there, he joined the Kentucky Militia and rose through the ranks to become Captain.

While residing in Mason Co Ky. he met and married Martha "Patsey" Maddox on Oct 21, 1801 in Maysville (Limestone). Patsey Maddox was born in 1773 in Maryland. She was the daughter of William Notley Maddox & his wife, Violetta Tarvin Maddox, both of whom descend from prominent families in St. Mary's & Charles COs, Maryland.

Patsey Maddox Harris died in 1823 in Campbell Co, Ky. On June 10, 1824, George married secondly, Jane Hudson of Boone Co, Ky. George died in 1834 at Harrisburgh Hill. His estate was probated by the Campbell Co Court on May 23, 1836. He is thought to be buried in the family cemetery behind Charlie T. Dawson's farmhouse. His widow, Jane Maddox, married secondly, Marcus Bridwell on August 5, 1834.

Charles Harris S. father of George Harris, was born in Somerset Co, Maryland, about 1748/49. Inventories in Somerset Co probate records show him as next-of-kin to Benton & Nehemiah Harris. There were many Harris families in Somerset Co who settled along Dividing Creek & the Wicomico River in the late 17th Century. Tradition says that the Harris' came from England, probably Wiltshire Co.

Charles married Mary Green on January 23, 1772, daughter of George Green, at Green Hill Church, Stepney Parish (today in Wicomico Co, MD). Shortly after the birth of their first child, George Harris, the family moved to Worcester Co, MD, in Wicomico Hundred in what was known as Coulbourn's 6th Addition, not far from present-day Salisbury. Charles sold George Green's (former) property in Sussex Co, DE, which had been deeded to his daughter Mary Green Harris. With the proceeds, he purchased land in Worcester Co, MD, and became a planter. The 1783 tax records show Charles Harris on a 200 a. tract named "Alderbury." It was owned by Benjamin & Robert Handy. Parish records show that the family worshipped at St Martin's Episcopal Church near Berlin, MD. Several family members were married there before 1800.

Following Mary Green Harris' death, Charles Harris Sr. married Hannah Noble on July 15, 1796 taking her infant child, Matilda, into his family. His family is listed in the 1778 & 1800 Maryland Census.

George Harris, son of Charles Harris, emigrated to Kentucky about 1794. Charles Harris and all but one of his children (Eliz. Harris Price) followed in 1806. They traveled overland by wagon along the old Braddock Road to Pittsburgh, then by flatboat down the Ohio River to Limestone (now Maysville). Several family members, including Charles B Harris, later settled in Adams & Highland COs, Ohio. Charles Harris Sr. accompanied by George & his other children, moved into Campbell Co along bottom land bordering the east bank of the Licking River. There in 1807 near Grant's Lick. Charles purchased land & lived the rest of his days in Campbell Co. Charles died in late Nov/Dec 1830, and is probably buried on Harrisburg Hill in the family cemetery with his son George.
