William Nelson Post No 1 GAR of Newport met Tuesday night at Memorial Hall and appointed the following committee on arrangements for its annual celebration of Decoration Day: G W Armstrong, R B Hewetson, Charles Hammond, Adam Hoch and Isaac Stebbins.

In addition Joseph Gaupel, G W Armstrong, R B Hewetson, Isaac Stebbens and Baldwin Staubach will go. The Newport delegates will support Hewetson of Newport, for Commander.

The annual commencement of the Newport High School held last night at Park av. School Hall, was a most succssful affair. Twenty-nine students were graduated. Prof. Charles Hammond, principal of the school, presented the diplomas.

Prof. Charles Hammond, principal of Park av. School, Newport, has been compelled to undergo the amputation of his left leg above the knee at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, for necrosis of the bone. The disease resulted from an old injury and the attending physicians say that he is getting along nicely.

The Newport Board of Education dropped the following from the pay rolls: Superintendent of Schools Chas G Hammond. The successor of Hammond was not named but it was hinted that Principal William Evans will be elected.

Tribute to the memory of the soldier dead will be paid next Friday afternoon when members of GAR posts of Campbell co. the Spanish War Veterans and other similary organizations will gather at Evergreen Cemetery to observe Decoration Day. Professor Charles Hammond, veteran of the Civil War and principal of the First District School, Newport, will be the principal orator. He will delived an address on "Our Soldier Dead."

Funeral services for Charles Hammond, former resident of Newport, will be held Wednesday afternoon at the Charls A Smith Sons funeral home, E Fourth st. Newport. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Hammond died last Thursday at his home, San Diego, Cal. He formerly was superintendent of Newport schools and for many years was principal of the Fourth Street School, Newport. He had been an educator 52 years.

The body is to arrive in Newport Tuesday night. Members of Robert Burns Lodge, F&AM, Newport, to which he belonged, will hold services for Hammond Wednesday at 1 pm at the funeral home. Hammond also was a member of Noahs Dove Lodge of Odd Fellows Newport and the GAR of Newport. Hammond is survived by four daughters.
