NEWPORT

CHARGED WITH EMBEZZLEMENT-A negro names Wm Thompson, better known as "Billy Button" was arrested Saturday upon a charge of embezzlement preferred against him by Catharine Tillman.

It seems that about the first of May Mrs. Tillman entrusted Thompson with $5 to go to market and buy her apiece of park, which he was to cook and divide with her, giving the other part to his wife. He failed, however, to do as directed, but appropriated the money to his own use.  Esquires Payne and Maphet, before whom the case was tried, after hearing the proof, held Thompson to bail in the sum of $100 for his appearance at the Criminal Court.
