The Morin War Claim
Colonel A T Morin received word from Washington yesterday that
the United States Government has decided to take up the claim for relief of the
heirs of Catharine Morin, now deceased, for damages incurred by Mrs. Morin to
her property during the late war.
Mrs. Morin, during the Civil War, was the owner of the property now owned by John Locke, in the Highlands. During September 1862, the United States troops, number about 8000 men, encamped on the property, converted the handsome brick residence into a hospital and kept it for two years.
They devastated the premise tearing off shutters, destroying mantels and consuming fences for fuel. They cut and burned much of the valuable timber and consumed as diet and provender, much corn, hay, apples &c.
A large magazine and a number of rifle pits were constructed to guard against the approach of General Kirby Smith. Mrs. Morin caused the damage to be assessed and it is stated at $5840.
The Committee of War Claims has recommended that the facts in the case be laid before Congress so that the claim may be settled as soon as possible. Hon Evan Settle interested himself in the case in behalf of the Morin heirs.
