Carl Futscher founding member of  Camp Springs Fire Department

Carl A. Futscher, one of the founders of the Camp Springs Volunteer Fire Department, died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. Futscher and four other Camp Springs residents formed the volunteer fire department in 1949. He served as an assistant chief with the department for 35 years, giving up the post in 1984. "He just couldn't handle the position anymore," said his son, Mike Futscher of Alexandria. "He did continue to attend meetings."

Futscher, 70 of Four Mile Pike, Camp Springs, was a retired maintenance worker with Fischer Manufacturing Co., Cincinnati, where he worked for 10 years. Prior to that, he worked as auto body man for 33 years. He was a member of the men's society at St. Joseph Church, Camp Springs, was a World War II Army veteran, a member of Simon Gosney Post 219 Disabled American Veterans and the Blue Grass Citizens. Other survivors include a daughter, Carol Futscher of Camp Springs; sister Edna Helert of Melbourne and Stella Franzen of Camp Springs; brothers Maynard Futscher of Cold Spring, Jerome Futscher of Camp Springs and Alex Futscher of Alexandria; and one grandson.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Alexandria. Memorials are suggested to the Camp Springs Volunteer Fire Department or Simon Gosney Post 219 Disabled American Veterans.
