Bernard Marshall, a member of the Covington Pioneer Club, was born on March 7, 1816 in Soegel, Post Office Huemling, Hannover. Since both of his parents died while he was still young, he was raised by his uncle. When fourteen years of age he began to learn the tailor trade which he later on perfected in Amsterdam, Holland. In 1841 he married Margaretha Weber of his hometown and on March 19, 1843, he, his wife and child immigrated to America.
He arrived in New York on April 24 and in May of the same year he came to Cincinnati and a year later he moved to Covington where he lived until he died on August 9, 1883. Shortly after his arrival in Covington he became a member of Mother of God's Church and since he had a good voice and also some knowledge in music he became a member of Mother of God's Church choir. He deserves much credit for the many years he served as treasurer of the parish especially during the erection of the beautiful Mother of God Church.
Marshall was also very active in public life. He held the position as school superintendent of the public schools in Covington. Because of his diligence and economy he had saved quite a bit of money and was able to give up his former profession. He worked as an inspector of the German Mutual Fire Insurance Company until his death.
Bernard Marshall was a charter member of the German Pioneer Club of Covington and a member of the first board. "He was an honest German" wrote a friend, "known and loved by everyone in town; whenever he could help, he would help and he loved especially his religion. His name will not be forgotten."
