Sgt. Benton Hanlon, 26, widely known softball player throughout northern Kentucky, was reported by the War Department as killed in action Dec 14.

Son of Mrs. Gretchen Hanlon, of 223 E Second street, Newport, Sgt. Hanlon entered the service more than two years ago and was sent overseas in September 1944. He received his basic training at Camp Maxey Tex. and Camp Van Doran, Miss. Also a former amateur football player, Sgt. Hanon played second base on the Sixth Ward Boosters softball team. Prior to his entering the service, he was a shipping clerk at an independent grocery at Pearl and Pike streets, Cincinnati.

Memorial services for S Sgt. Benton Hanlon, the first member of the Sixth Ward Boosters Club, Newport, to be killed in action, will be held at 2 pm Sunday by members of the club at the Veterans Memorial on the lawn of the Newport Courthouse. Members of the club will meet at the memorial. Sgt. Hanlon, who was 26, was reported killed in action Dec 14 in Germany. He resided with his mother, Mrs. Gretchen Hanlon, at 226 E Second street Newport.

Impressive services were conducted Sunday at the memoril monument on the lawn of the Newport Courthouse honoring S Sgt. Benton Hanlon, who was killed in action last Dec 14 in the European theater of war.

"We trust that as we honor the memory of this brave soldier that his death shall not have been in vain," Rev Charles J Schaufuss, pastor of the York Street Congregational Church, Newport, said in his memorial address. "We also trust that his devotion to duty, both as a citizen and a soldier, will inspire all of us to greater patriotic devotion to our homes, our schools, our churches and to our country."

Sgt. Joseph Meyer Jr. retired placed a wreath at the base of the momument. Taps were sounded by Richard Swope and John Clark.

Ceremonies marked the installation of officers of the new Lawler-Hanlon Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sunday at the American Legion Home, 22 E Sixth street, Newport. James Whitehead was installed as commander, which was named in memory of T-Sgt. Harry Lawler and S-Sgt Benon Hanlon, two of Newports heroes in World War II. Among the honored guests were Miss Nellie Hanon and John Hanlon, sister and brother of Sgt. Hanlon. His mother, Gretchen Hanlon was unable to attend because of illness.

Final Tribute-Former comrades of s Sgt. Benton Hanlon, son of Mrs. Gretchen Hanlon, carry him to his final resting place in Highland Cemetery during full military services Wednesday. Members of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps joined in the rites. Sgt. Hanlon, former widely known Kentucky softball player was killed Dec 14, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge.
