Benjamin Coleman Gosney was born 21 Feb 1766 in Virginia, the son of Henry Gosney and Mary Jane Shelton. He married his first wife, Sarah Applebee 2 Mar 1789 in Culpepper Co. Virginia. Sarah died in 1794 in Culpepper Co. Virginia. By 1796 Benjamin owned 203 acres at Phillips Creek in Campbell County. He drilled a salt well on his property on what is now Morning View Road. He also built a saw and grist mill on this property. Later Benjamin sold 16 acres including the salt mill to Samuel Bryan. This farm is now owned by Howard Bryan.

Benjamin married his second wife, Margaret Colvin, daughter of John and Margaret Colvin, in 1795 in Culpepper Co. Virginia. She was born 2 Nov 1775 in Culpepper Co. and died 21 May 1845 in Campbell County.
