Beech Grove Schools
Beech Grove Academy was a very early school and seminary/academy. First started in 1858 on Smith Road by the Rev James M Jolly, a two story brick building was put up in 1869. It started out as an elementary and high school/seminary, and was also called Flagg Springs school. It closed and was torn down in 1911.
Beech Grove School #2 replaced the original building in 1911. When California High School came into being, Beech Grove remained as an elementary, with the high school students going down into the town of California. Beech Grove was a two room brick school identical to Oakland 12 Mile and closed in 1928 when A J Jolly Elementary and High School opened. It has been since converted into a house.
