Newport Barracks Cemetery

Several references have been made in the history of the Newport Barracks that there was a cemetery on the grounds. It is believed that the U marked above on the map of the barracks was the cemetery. Research is ongoing for this cemetery and the men who were buried there. When the Newport Barracks was closed and the soldiers moved to the new Ft Thomas Barracks, any bodies found were moved to Evergreen Cemetery.

Because of floods over the years, the grounds of the Newport Barracks have left little evidence of a cemetery. The following soldiers are supposed to have been buried in this cemetery, as Evergreen did not start burying anyone until 1849.

This list was compiled from post returns in the National Archives in Washington, DC  from letters sent and received there, from newspaper accounts. It is by no means a complete list.
