Jonathan Barnes' Confectionary
Cincinnati Commercial Tribune, Tuesday, 23 February 1864, page 2
On Saturday night, a gang of rowdies with which Newport has been
cursed for several years past, went on a rampage, tearing down sign boards,
breaking open houses, etc.
They smashed in the fine show window of Jonathan Barnes' Confectionary at the corner of York and Southgate streets, and stole several boxes of sardines and about six dollars worth of candy. The scoundrels next proceeded to the coal office of Thomas Spinks at the corner of Front and York, which they broke open and robbed of various small articles, including a gold pen. They forced open the door of Ahlring's coal office on Monmouth street and scattered the books an papers of Mr. A on the floor.
