William Shreve and Caroline Ann Bailey

Information comes from the family files at the Campbell County Historical & Genealogical Society in Alexandria, various newspaper and magazine articles.

William Shreve Bailey was born in Feb 10, 1806 in Centerville, Greene Co, Ohio, the son of John Bailey and Rebeka Shreve. He married Caroline Ann Withnal Dec 13, 1827 in Washington, Montgomery Co, Ohio.  Caroline Ann Withnal was born 5 Jan 1813 in New York and was the daughter of William & Nancy Withnal. She died 8 Mar 1867 in Newport of dropsy and was buried Mar 12 in the Newport Cemetery (now Evergreen) in Southgate. William Bailey died 20 Feb 1886 in Nashville, Tennessee, and was buried in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville.

William Bailey was an abolitionist who moved to Newport in 1839 and wrote anti-slavery newspaper articles for The Newport News. A more detailed account of the families newspaper time can be found at

William Shreve Bailey, Kentucky Abolitionist.

William Bailey was the only Kentucky representative to attend the planning convention for the Republican National Convention of 1856.  Consequently, he was elected to be one of the honorary vice-presidents of the convention and place on the Address and Resolutions Committee. Like Republicans of a later century those of 1856 welcomed anyone, no matter how undistinguished in his native state, who would come up from the South to give that section representation at their nations gatherings.

On February 16, 1860, in a letter Bailey wrote to Simeon S Joceyln of Newport, he asked that correspondence addressed to him be sent to Covington as the postmaster at Newport was one of the mob that attacked him. The Covington Postmaster he declared was a "gentleman".  American Missionary Association Papers, The Louisville Journal, October 31, 1859

In 1861 Bailey needed more money than he could get locally, so he made a trip to England to raise money to keep his newspaper in business.  After the Civil War, he settled in Covington to continue publishing.

After the death of his wife, Caroline in 1867, William moved to Nashville. He shows up on the 1870 census where he was still engaged in the printing business. No other family came with him.
