Mayor-elect Dr. August Helmbold, of Newport, will continue to
serve as an Alderman until this month is over. He tendered his resignation to
qualify for Mayor, but Mayor Nelson refused to accept it, stating that he
desired him to serve on the board until the close.
Helmbold is at present President of the Aldermen.

Dr. August Helmbold, Mayor of Newport, was suddenly stricken with illness last evening in Norwood O. while returning from a professional call on one of his patients of that place. Dr. Helmbold was waiting for a car to return to Newport when he was suddenly taken ill and had to be assisted back to the home of the patient he had just left, where he remained until 2 am when he was brought to his home on Central av.
At noon today he was somewhat better and no serious results are anticipated as the outcome of the attack. His illness was caused by a slight attack of cholera and the heart. He had put in a very busy day yesterday, which culminated in his being made deathly sick.

Dr. August Helmbold, 718 Columbia st. twice mayor of Newport, was reported to be dying late Tuesday by his physicians, Dr. George Hermann of Newport and Dr. John Grieve of Cincinnati. Dr. Hermann expressed the belief that the former official would pass away before evening. Dr. Helmbold has been in poor health for the past several years but Sunday he suffered a relapse.
Dr. Helmbold had been a member of the old Board of Aldermen. After the expiration of his second term as mayor, Dr. Helmbold ran for city commissioner, but was defeated by a small majority.

The body of Dr. August Helmbold, Newport's first mayor under the commission plan of government, who died at 10 pm Tuesday, will lie in state at his late home, 718 Columbia st. Newport, Thursday from 3 to 9 pm. The public will be allowed to view the body. The funeral services will be private at the home Friday at 1:30 pm.
Rev Paul Reikow, pastor of St John Evangelical Church and Rev J J Motschman, pastor of St Mark Lutheran Church will officiate at the services. These will be pallbearers: August Helmbold Jr. R L Wischmeyer, W W Pagan, H W Hanshue, William Schmidt and Frederick Schmidt. Dr. Helmbold's body will be buried in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery.
The former official was 56 years old last February. His career as a politician and physician was successful. Besides Dr. Helmbold's widow, these children survive him: Mrs. Emma Hanshue, of Dayton O. Mrs. Frieda Wischmeyer of Newport; August Jr. and William Wallace. Dr. Helmbold was born in Germany and came to this country when he was a young man and settled in Newport, where he studied medicine. He graduated from Miami University.
He was Newport's first mayor under the commission rule of government in 1911. He served in the Board of Aldermen from 1899 until 1906. He then defeated Edward Lohmeyer for mayor and was head executive of the city under the old form of government. At the expiration of this term as mayor, Dr. Helmbold retired from active politics until the fall of 1911, when he again was elected mayor. His last political venture was in 1913 when he was defeated for city commissioner.

Major A J Livingston of Newport ordered Thursday that all city offices be closed Thursday afternoon so city employees could view the body of Dr. August Helmbold, former mayor who died at his home, 718 Columbia st. Newport. The flag in the courthouse yard was at half mast Thursday.
"As a further mark of respect, I order all city offices closed on the afternoon of July 12, so that all city employees may attend the funeral and I direct that the bells in various fire towers be tolled during the funeral on the afternoon of July 12." A J Livingston, Mayor.

Judge A M Caldwell admitted the will of the late Dr. August Helmbold to probate. The document provides for the disposition of property valued at $150,000. The will was dated April 27, 1917. Dr. Helmbold provides that the estate be held intact until August Jr. his son, becomes of age. Until August Helmbold attains his majority the home at 718 Columbia is to be the home for all members.
Mrs. Bertha Pagan Helmbold is named as guardian of the minor children, William and Karl. Mrs. Margueritha Schmidt is named guardian for August Helmbold Jr. Dr. Helmbold left all his guns, office fixtures, surgical instruments, library and jewelry to his son, August.
