Arthur Scherer, the returning First California Volunteer, of
Newport, who was wounded at the fall of Manila, will be banqueted Wednesday
night at Elks Hall, Newport by the citizens of Newport, as a reward for his
valor.

The Roosevelt Fairbanks Republican Club in Newport, held a meeting Monday night in the temporary quarters on Monmouth st. Captains of 25 companies were present and a number of new captains were appointed.
A F Scherer, a veteran of the war in the Philippines was elected Commander of the brigade, and Capt. Robert Townsend, a veteran of the Civil War, was elected Vice Commander. Many enthusiastic speeches were made by the members.

Arthur was born 22 Nov 1875 in Newport, the son of Henry and Fredericka (Weber). He married Laura L Grundhoefer in 1902 and died in Los Angeles California 1 Feb 1960.
