Anthony Link
 

Anthony Link was born 14 Nov 1826 in Cincinnati, the son of Joseph and Catherine Link. He enlisted in the Union Army as a musician 15 Aug 1864 and served on the naval vessel USS Black Hawk.

Black Hawk, a side-wheel river steamer, was built in 1848 as Uncle Sam at New Albany, Indiana; purchased by the Navy at Cairo, Illinois, November 24, 1862 as New Uncle Sam; commissioned December 6, 1862, Lieutenant Commander K R Breese in command; and renamed Black Hawk December 13, 1862.

During most of her service Black Hawk served as flagship for Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter, Captain Alexander Mosely Pennock and Rear Admiral Samuel Phillips Lee, successive commanders of the Mississippi Squadron. During Anthony's service, she patrolled in the Mississippi River and its tributaries. On April 22, 1865 she accidentally burned and sank, three miles above Cairo, Illinois. Her wreck was raised and sold at St Louis, Missouri, in April 1867.

Anthony  was discharged 30 May 1865.

He married Elizabeth J Barr 19 Nov 1863 in Dayton. He worked as a paper maker, worked in the rope walk and retired by 1910. Anthony died 2 Aug 1911 in Dayton Ky. and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.

Anthony Link, 84, died of senility at his home, 1030 Front st. Dayton yesterday morning. He was a resident of Dayton for 60 years. His daughter is the mother of Mrs. William Schum of Cincinnati, who was shot by her husband, Fireman William Schum several weeks ago. His grandson Joseph Link, is Dayton's City Assessor. He is survived by a widow, two sons and two daughters. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 1 pm with interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
