GAMBLING


Anthony (Tony) Guerrea, 610 Monmouth street, operator of the Monmouth Bar, Newport, was fined $200 and cost Wednesday on a guilty plea in Campbell Circuit Court to a charge of setting up and operating a game of chance. Mr. Guerrea had been arrested several months ago when a man identified as Straud Wilson, 134 W Third street, Newport, called police and told them a game was being conducted in that place.

Handbook equipment was confiscated when police investigated.

While a continuance was granted Tony Guerrea, 52, of 211 E Seventh street, Newport, arrested for operating a handbook in the Wagon Wheel Cafe, Eighth and Saratoga streets, Newport, witnesses in the raid will appear before the grand jury which is now in session.  Police Judge Alfred G Maybury continued the case Thursday until May 19 upon the motion of Joseph Rolf, counsel for the defendant.

Detectives Jack Thiem and William Livingston, acting upon orders of Chief George Gugel, visited the cafe last Wednesday and reported finding a handbook in operation.

A handbook operating charge against Tony Guerrea, 52, arrested recently when Detectives Jack Thiem and William Livingston raided a "book" at the Wagon Wheel, Eighth street and Saratoga avenue, Newport, was referred to the grand jury Tuesday by Police Judge Alfred G Maybury. Guerrea waived examination. Detectives raided the alleged book on orders from Police Chief George Gugel.

Only one gambling indictment was returned. That was a handbook operation charge against Anthony Guerrea, resulting from a Newport police raid last May 6 at a cafe at the northeast corner of Eighth and Saratoga streets.

A $350 and costs fine was imposed Thursday by Campbell County Trial Commissioner Thomas F Schnoor against Anthony (Tony) Guerrea, arrested by County Police Chief James Winters and patrolman George Arnold for operating a handbook. Daniel W Davis, counsel for Mr. Guerrea entered a guilty plea to suffering gambling.  Police arrested the defendant after Mrs. Elizabeth Hallam, swore to a warrant charging he operated a handbook in the rear of a cafe, Newport. She swore to the warrant after she failed to recover $200 her son in law lost in the "book."
