Angelina Sword

Daily Cincinnati Commercial, Wednesday, 6 February 1850, page 2

Yesterday, our neighboring town of Newport was thrown into a state of tremendous excitement by the exposure of the most inhuman rape that has probably ever been placed upon record.

It appears that a soldier of the Barracks, named Perkins had been keeping a woman by the name of Swords, near the Barracks for some time past, and about ten days ago this inhuman mother gave up her daughter, of only 13 years of age, to the fiendish lasciviousness of this Perkins, from which time she suffered excruciating agony, and died night before last, from the supposed effects of this inhuman act.

Perkins and the inhuman mother were lodged in prison to await an examination, which will be held by the Coroner this morning at 8 am. We were informed at a late hour last evening that the mother had been liberated from prison fro the purpose of being State's evidence.

The case at Newport Ky. wherein a US soldier and a young girl were said to be concerned, and about which so much has been published, has turned out, we hear to be all smoke. Tis true the girl died, but her having been the victim of the evil passions of the soldier is all a mistake. She has been in ill health a long while and on the testimony of a resident physician of Newport, she died from no cause of recent origin.
