Murder of Dr. Randall
Dr. Andrew Randall, well known to many of our citizens, was shot on the 21st of August last, by a man named Hetherington, in the bar room of the St. Nicholas Hotel, San Francisco, and died on the Saturday following. Hetherington was arrested by the Vigalance Committee and after examination by that body, condemned to be hung. This sentence was executed on the next Tuesday.
This was not the first murder committed by Hetherington. He murdered Dr. Baldwin in 185I, and escaped conviction only through much corruption in the Courts. On the scaffold he said he was ready to meet his God.
The True Californian says:
"Dr. Andrew Randall, shot by Joseph Hetherington on Thursday afternoon, died Saturday morning about nine o'clock. From the nature of the wound, it has been a wonder to many how he lived so long. The ball, which was half an ounce in weight, entered the left temple, near the outer end of the eyebrow, and must have lodged in the left hemisphere of the brain. When he was first raised from the floor on which he had fallen, a considerable quantity of the brain was protruding from the orifice. From the first the whole of the right side and right limbs were paralyzed, for the fibres of the brain crossing each other, an injury to one hemisphere is manifested by a paralysis of the opposite side of the body.
Dr. Randall leaves a wife and four children. He is in possession of a large amount of landed (due to fold in paper unable to read) is doubtful if his estate is more than solvent.
In 1852 Dr. Randall possessed an immense landed estate in California, accounting to 200.000 acres of valuable land, besides a large number of cattle distributed on his various ranches.
He also owned real estate in San Francisco at that time, valued at $200,000. Being unable to meet his obligations, however, he became deeply involved and was in 1854 almost reduced to poverty. Dr. Randall was a quiet unobtrusive gentleman and was much respected in San Francisco. His parents reside in Campbell County, Ky.
