Alvin Noel

Newport police Monday were probing a story told by Alvin Noel, 25, wounded war veteran of 313 Chestnut st. Newport, in which he declared he was attacked and robbed of $150 Sunday night on Patterson st. Three men, he told police, attacked him.

"Give us your roll," one of the men demanded of Noel. Instead of handing it over like "a lamb" Noel told police he swung a right to the highwayman's jaw and he fell. The other two men then jumped on Noel and after beating him, relieved him of his roll.

Noel, police say, said he was cut with a razor by one of the thugs. According to Noel's story, he had just been given his compensation, $125, by Cincinnati war officials and was returning hom when attacked. Noel was gassed while in the Argonne Forest.
