"Capt. A M Wetherill, sixth United States infantry, killed while leading his men at the charge up the heights of San Juan, besides giving his life to his country, had rendered her thirty-one years of the most active, efficient and honorable service in all parts of the United States. Carrying a musket while a mere boy in the Civil War, he later participated in various Indian campaigns in the west.

Alexander Macomb Wetherill, the son of Dr. William Wetherill, of Philadelphia and Isabella Macomb, was the namesake of his relative, Major Gen Alexander Macomb, commander of the army. By those under him, as well as among the officers, Captain Wetherill was well liked, which constitutes one of the sure signs of a true soldier."
