Albert
Smith
Kentucky Post, Saturday, 21 November 1903, page 5
Albert Smith, a well known farmer of Grants Lick, 15 miles south of Newport, was terribly injured while hunting last Wednesday afternoon, in the woods beyond that place. He was engaged in in loading a muzzle loader gun, when it prematurely discharged taking off his right hand at the wrist. He was several miles from home when the accident occurred and a friend, who was with him, took him to the home of Philip Schafer.
A messenger was quickly despatched for a physician, Dr. Poe, of Butler Ky, who responded and amputated what was left of the hand at the wrist. Smith is 38 years of age and is liked in the country where he is known. The accident is a deplorable one as Smith is a married man with a wife and four children.
He was unable to return to them until Friday afternoon, although they had been notified of the accident. The attending physician states that the only thing to fear is the possibility of blood poisoning.
