NEWPORT DEATH OF ALBERT SILVA
Albert Silva, 70, Secretary of the Union Light, Heat & Power
Company, and one of Newport's most prominent business men, died yesterday at a
private hospital in Indianapolis Ind. following an operation performed by Dr.
Eastman for the removal of a cancerous growth. The news of Mr. Silva's death
came as a great shock to his many friends in Cincinnati, Newport and Covington,
where he was well known. It had been states that he had been ill, but it
was not thought that his condition was dangerous.
Mr. Silva was born in Milan Italy and came to the United States when quite young. For the past 10 years he had resided in Newport. During the Civil War he joined the regular army and for several years after the close of the war was Sergeant Major serving at the Newport Barracks. Later he engaged in business in Newport and became an expert accountant. His first public position was a delinquent tax collector of Newport. Later when Colonel R W Nelson was elected Mayor, he made Mr. Silva City Auditor.
It was said of him during his connection with the city there was not a man in Kentucky better posted on the laws and workings of cities of the second class. His wide knowledge of the law made him a very valuable civil expert.
Officials of the Union Light, Heat and Power Company then offered Mr. Silva the post of Secretary of that corporation. He was serving in that capacity at the time he was stricken. He was at one time President of the Carnegie Library Commission of Newport.
A widow and seven children survive him. The remains arrived here last night and were removed to the family home on Overton street, where the funeral services will be held.
